Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

KUALA LUMPUR: The national auto industry needs to be sustained if Malaysia is to have a positive balance of trade," says former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He noted that there would be a RM12 billion outflow from the country if all cars are imported, and at the same time, certainly increase the trade deficit.

"The national car has clearly contributed much towards reducing Malaysia's trade deficit and helped in the establishment of engineering industries, extending well beyond automobile manufacturing.

"It has also helped qualify Malaysia as a developed country which requires a high level of industrialisation, sophistication of economy and per capita income," he added.

Dr Mahathir, who is also the Proton advisor, said the national car maker, while not earning much money from exports, had still helped the country by preventing an outflow of money, through the purchase of foreign cars.

Speaking at a special luncheon in conjunction with the 4th Kuala Lumpur International Automotive Conference here on Wednesday, he said of the 600,000 units of cars sold annually, half the number was locally made.

"Assuming an average price of RM40,000 per unit, the total sales value would be about RM12 billion. This additional amount will be an outflow out if all cars are imported.

"Taking everything into consideration, Proton has contributed much towards the nation's economy and its development," Dr Mahathir added. - Bernama
Peda wants the Government to set a clear direction for Proton and Perodua under the revised NAP.

PETALING JAYA: The Proton Edar Dealers Association Malaysia (Peda) is hopeful that compulsory annual vehicle inspection for vehicles above 10 years old will be introduced in the revised National Automotive Policy (NAP).

“It will ensure the health and road safety of vehicles on the road.

“We also hope that there will be proper phase-by-phase implementation of the end-of-life vehicle (ELV) policy,” said Peda president Armin Baniaz Pahamin.

“Without ELV, Malaysia would not be able to sustain new car registration total industry volume (TIV) in the future, which will effect employment and future investment into automotive industry,” he added.

Armin said he hoped that the implementation of the ELV would be done in phases after the policy was introduced.

“The number of cars on the road and our total new car sales TIV per annum is over-populated compared with our population that is only one-third of Thailand and a lot smaller compared with Indonesia.”

StarBiz reported recently that the (ELV) policy was expected to make a comeback in the latest revision of the NAP, which, according to market talk, would be announced by year-end.

Citing an industry observer, it was reported that owners of vehicles aged 10 years to 15 years would have to undergo mandatory roadworthiness inspection under the ELV policy, which was scrapped in 2009 following public protest.

Armin also hopes that the NAP would have clearer direction for the national carmakers, namely DRB Hicom Bhd’s wholly-owned unit Proton Holdings Bhd and Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua).

“Currently there is no clear direction on where our national carmakers are heading.

“There is also a need to re-define the classification of what a national car is and those that do not qualify should not get the incentives from the Government.”

Armin said incentives for the national carmakers should be retained.

“Policies for national carmakers should be differentiated with non-national cars and these policies are needed to make the former more competitive,” he said.

The southbound journey began from the Proton Edar Sdn Bhd Centre of Excellence in Subang Jaya on a sunny Saturday morning and took us through a mix of straight stretches of highways and windy roads.

It was a colourful convoy as all the colour options for the Suprima S - Fire Red, Tranquility Black, Solid White, Genetic Silver and the brand new Atlantic Blue - were unleashed for the drive.

All the colours work well here as none of it could disguise its lines and good-looking sporty shape.

While one might argue that, looks-wise, it’s pretty similar to the earlier Preve model, there are differences such as the black honeycomb grille, the sleeker front and rear bumper design (the latter incorporates the angular and aerodynamic brake lamps) and extended roofline courtesy of the roof spoiler.

There’s an ease that comes with driving the car in terms of steering, handling and performance.

The 1.6-litre CamPro turbo engine, with 140PS and a maximum torque of 205Nm, is grunty and delivers enough performance to make our drive enjoyable.

The engine only starts to get rougher once it exceeds 5,000rpm.

Mated to a smooth seven-speed ProTronic CVT (continuously variable transmission), there’s no fuss bringing the Suprima S up to speed even when I was light-footed with the accelerator.

This is a car that just wants to go regardless.

While the exhaust notes of CVT-equipped cars are notorious for being flat and hollow, the Suprima S begs to differ and has the tunes that are raspy and satisfying.

It’s a really spirited driving experience with the precise steering, responsive braking and class-leading handling.

Even around corners, body roll is minimal.

It does after all come with the Lotus-approved suspension set up which is slightly firm yet not uncomfortable for long drives.

The cabin makes you feel secure and comfortable and well insulated from vibration and noise.

A long-haul drive such as this proved to be pleasurable and I was not plagued by fatigue, a big plus in my book.

The issue I found with the interior is the build quality especially the glove compartment; it’s flimsy.

The bottom half of the centre console which houses the three knobs for climate controls is just plain.

Proton, however, has gone to great lengths to make sure the Suprima S meets international safety standards and received a five-star ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) safety rating.

Proton has ambitious plans for the Suprima S, among which is to “uplift the brand image of Proton,” said Proton general manager for product planning & strategy Hazrin Fazail Haroon during his presentation.

It’s the right attitude to take. Even more encouraging, is that the Proton management acknowledges the problems and negative connotations it face.

It says it is ready to deal with such perceptions head-on by emphasising the needs of the customers first.
It is a step in the right direction indeed.

The Suprima S Executive and Premium are priced at RM76,688 and RM79,988 respectively on-the-road in Peninsular Malaysia.

NUSAJAYA: Proton is confident that bookings for its latest model, Suprima S, will exceed the intial sales target of 750 units in its first month.

Its chief operating officer (Commercial), Hisham Othman, said the response for the hatchback model was "very encouraging" as the company had received hundreds of bookings although it was introduced in the market just about a week.

"From our observation, our customers are attracted to the model's exterior design, styling, colour choices and hatchback profile.

"During the test drive, they found out that this model is also good in terms of performance," he told reporters here today.

Hisham expected the Suprima S to contribute about 10 per cent to the overall monthly sales of Proton, based on growing interest for the hatchback model.

"The hatchback segment in Malaysia represents a niche market. Local customers are more fond of owning sedan models compared with the hatchback," he said.

He said hatchback models such as Suprima S were more favoured by customers with a small family.

Nevertheless, Hisham believed the hatchback market would grow every year and the model would become more popular among car enthusiasts in Malaysia.

"Our biggest market to date is Malaysia, and certainly it is our intention to export the Suprima S to foreign markets such as Australia, Indonesia, Brunei and Thailand, just like our other models previously.

"We are confident this model will get the reception in foreign market as it is recognised by the Australian NCAP (New Car Assesment Programme) with five-star rating, indicating the highest level of safety," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The newly launched Proton Suprima S is poised to be the "game changer" in improving the standards and qualities in the national carmaker's cars and changing public perception on Proton, Hong Leong Investment Bank said today.

It said the launching of Suprima S would enhance Proton's product range offerings and help to regain back market confidence and market share.

"We expect Suprima S to receive positive response from the public, similar to the previous launch of Saga SV in mid-June, which has received over 20,000 orders," said the investment bank in a note.

The new Proton variant priced between RM76,000 and RM80,000 and has successfully obtained Australasian New Car Assessment Programme rating of five stars and claimed to be superior to other same class hatchbacks available in Malaysia market, which are priced above RM120,000.

The bank maintained "buy" rating on DRB-Hicom with unchanged target price of RM3.36 based on 20 per cent discount to sum-of-parts valuation. - Bernama

The Suprima S is available in two variants, namely Executive and Premium which are priced at RM76,688 and 79,988 (metallic colour) on-the-road in Peninsular Malaysia.

It has a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, mated to a seven-speed ProTronic CVT (continuously variable transmission), that produces 140ps at 5,000rpm and a maximum torque of 205Nm from 2,000 to 4,000rpm.

Its driving dynamics is enhanced with Lotus ride and handling.

The new hatchback's fuel consumption on the combined cycle is rated at 9.1 litres per 100km.

The new car was officially launched by Proton advisor and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

Also present was Proton executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil who said, "The Suprima S comes with the highest safety standards Proton has offered. This is the future we envision for all our products and services, and represents the benchmark we set for the standards and quality that Proton aims to deliver to its customers."

Standard safety features for the new hatchback include six airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake force distribution), brake assist, ESC (electronic stability control) with Traction Control, Isofix and top tether mount point, front active head rest, front and rear fog lamps, all-round disc brakes, and rear parking sensors.

Also standard are projector headlamps, rear LED light guides, tail gate remote release, and a WiFi-enabled Proton Infotainment with Android-based operating system which features a seven-inch LCD touchscreen with DVD player, built-in GPS navigation, bluetooth, USB and iPod connectivity.

Meanwhile, features that are found only in the Premium variant include Hill-Hold Assist, front parking sensors, reverse camera, automatic headlamps, leather upholstery, six audio speakers, DRL (daytime running lights), paddle shifters, automatic climate air-conditioner, push start button, auto cruise and auto front wipers.

The Executive variant gets 205/55 R16 tyres while the Premium variant has 215/45 R17 tyres.

The Executive variant comes with water repellent fabric seats and four audio speakers.

The new hatchback's 427-litre rear luggage volume is said to be best-in-class.

Five colour choices are available: Fire Red, Tranquility Black, Solid White, Genetic Silver and a brand new colour, Atlantic Blue.

Proton chief operating officer (commercial) Hisham Othman said the name Suprima S is derived from the word "supreme", and reflects superiority in engineering, safety and performance.

"The S means sports. It is a hatchback, and meant to be sporty."

Hisham also said the Suprima S is not a Proton Preve hatchback.

"It is a new model for the hatchback segment."

Bernama quoted Poton as saying it is initially targeting to sell 750 units of the Suprima S locally per month.

Mohd Khamil however reckoned that it might exceed the target due to the current demand for hatchback cars from young customers.

"We are also looking at the export market as soon as possible, maybe within this year.

"We are targeting markets within the Asia Pacific for the time being, and probably we will start off with the Asian region such as Indonesia, Thailand and Australia."

However, Mohd Khamil said Proton would first ensure that it could meet domestic demand before exporting the model.
KUALA LUMPUR: The launch of Proton Suprima S will hopefully correct the public perception that the local car manufacturer produces sub-standard cars, said Proton adviser Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

This is necessary because Proton manufactures cars that meet international standards, he said.

“I hope the perception that Proton produces cheap, low quality cars will be corrected because Proton cars are of the same standard as other famous car manufacturers,” he said at the launch of Suprima S at the Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Convention Centre here earlier today.

Suprima S is Proton’s first “hatchback” model fitted with safety features such as six airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC).

Dr Mahathir said the Suprima S was designed to attract the younger set of buyers who were keen on the hatchback as it is more sporty than the sedan.

Suprima S is available at all Proton showrooms nationwide with prices starting from RM76,338 for the Executive model and RM79,638 for the Premium model.

Public Land Transport Commission chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, who was also present at the ceremony, was announced as the first buyer of the Suprima S.

Also present were Dr Mahathir’s wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali and Proton executive chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil. — Bernama

SHAH ALAM: Bookings for Proton Saga SV, launched by Proton Holdings Bhd in June, has surpassed 12,000 units, Proton Edar Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Hisham Othman said last night.

"I'm very happy. This is a very encouraging figure. The product that Proton produced has fulfilled Malaysians' taste," he told reporters at a breaking-of-fast event with Proton employees.

Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is also Proton advisor, attended the event.

Hisham said Proton Edar expected the demand for Proton Saga SV to continue to rise as the car provided value for money, with safety features like airbags for front seat passenger even though the price was RM5,000 cheaper than previous Proton Saga models.

On the total number of Proton Saga SV that have been registered, Hisham said the initial target was only 2,000 units a month, but this month alone 5,500 units have been registered.

Asked on the Preve hatchback model to be introduced in the market, Hisham said the model will be launched this year. He declined to elaborate.  – Bernama
