It is my hope that the PROTON Design Competition will be the catalyst to the growth of the automotive industry in Malaysia especially in the area of automotive design," he added.

"We feel that there is so much potential in the students and the quality of their submissions. Of course, we could see that there is so much to improve too in terms of their exposure to the world of automotive but that is alright, because this competition is fairly new in the country. The winner for Category 2 would benefit from the internship at PROTON Design and we foresee that in years to come, the knowledge transfer and exposure to young Malaysians can further boost the knowledge and competency in the quality of submissions. We won't be surprised that young Malaysians can excel in this area internationally, if we nurture them well and look into this long term," he added further.

JOHOR BAHRU, As part of its aggressive on-going nationwide transformation exercise to improve its service centres and the upgrade of its network’s facilities and services, PROTON Holdings Bhd (PROTON) today held a symbolic event and officiated the new look to one of its largest 3S service outlets in Pasir Gudang.

The centre, known as Kulis Auto Sdn Bhd, is an authorised PROTON dealer since the past nine years. With the initial building cost of RM5 million, the 3S Service Centre has been serving customers in Johor Bahru (JB) as well as the surrounding areas such as the towns of Kota Tinggi, Plentong, Johor Jaya, Masai and Ulu Tiram.

PROTON Edar Sdn Bhd's Chief Executive Officer, Encik Norzahid Mohd Zahudi said the 3S Service Centre enables the company to tap into the growing demand for Proton cars in Johor. As it is, this impressive 2.0 acre facility features an area with customer lounge facilities, a meeting room, Astro and free high-speed WiFi internet in addition to a service centre equipped with eight service bays and the capacity to service up to 15 cars a day.

“Last year Proton cars market expanded to 14% in this state. So far in 2014, we have seen the demand for Proton brands in Johor increasing, keeping our marque in line with other brands,” he said.

In the event, this PROTON 3S Service Centre saw the unveiling of PROTON’s new logo from the rebranding exercise it underwent in 2013. The new CEO of PROTON Edar, En Norzahid Mohd Zahudi was tasked to see through that all PROTON authorised outlets make the necessary changes to keep the look and feel of the brand consistent. This is part of the national automotive manufacturer’s transformation plan which has also seen the launch of a recently upgraded 4S service outlet in Sungai Petani, Kedah. All other PROTON outlets are currently carrying out this initiative nationwide.

In conjunction with the event, two units of Iriz were presented to their proud owners.

Adding more cheer to Johoreans, PROTON is currently offering its customers a special promotion package known as “My PROTON Family” that allows current Proton owners to purchase another Proton car with a loyalty discount of 5%. Apart from that, all new cars come with three years free service and up to five years free warranty.

En. Norzahid said, PROTON valued the support of its loyal customers and wanted to show its appreciation by giving the privilege. “The offer is also extended to the Proton car owner’s father, mother, spouse and children. This means that their next Proton car does not necessarily have to be registered under the existing customer’s name,” he said.

PROTON currently has 270 service outlets nationwide with 16 outlets upgraded to 4S centres. For a start, 47 outlets have started opening 7 days a week starting 10 October 2014, whilst the rest will follow suit by January 2015, gradually.

Customers are advised to call PROTON We-Care at 1-800-888-398 for details of the participating service centres nearest to them or visit www.proton.com for the list of participating service centres. As higher volume of customers are expected during the weekend in some areas, customers are advised to make an appointment.

SUBANG JAYA: National automotive manufacturer Proton, opens its second 4S (Sales, Service, Spare parts and Spray paint) centre in the northern region of Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Operated by Mercu Usaha Mesra Corporation (MUMC), the facility - previously a 1S outlet occupying a two shop-lot facility, now occupies a new building on 78,000 square feet of land.

According to Proton chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah, the company is looking to instigate improvements at all levels, with efforts concentrated at providing quality services and convenience to all its customers.

One such convenience is having its service centres open seven days a week in the more urban or busy areas after having identified a trend pointing to Proton owners preferring to service their vehicle over the weekend.

Beginning Oct 10, 40 service centre outlets will begin operating on all seven days, while the remaining centres will gradually follow suit by January 2015.

"People have said to me that producing good quality cars do not suffice if we fail to see the much needed improvements in our after-sales-services team, and we agree,” said Harith.

Proton currently has 270 service outlets nationwide - 16 of which are 4S centres.
TANJUNG MALIM: The new Proton Iriz promises class-leading comfort and safety features as well as being easy on the pocket.

Also present were Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Hamim Samuri, and Proton chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah, and DRB-Hicom Bhd chairman Datuk Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza.

Its size pits it against B-segment cars like the Honda Jazz, Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo.

The Iriz has new 1.3 and 1.6-litre engines with VVT (variable valve timing).

The 1.3-litre Iriz comes in entry-grade Standard and mid-grade Executive variants, while the 1.6-litre Iriz has Executive and high-grade Premium variants.

"We are improving our quality to meet the stringent requirements of foreign markets. During the development of the Iriz, we tested the car in winter conditions in Sweden and also, in extreme desert environment where temperature was 42 degrees Celsius.

"The Iriz also ran for 100,000km in endurance testing. You will find driving the Iriz a great pleasure. It is the best car I have driven out of Proton."

SHAH ALAM: The upcoming Proton Compact Car (PCC) will have class-leading comfort and safety features, as well as attractive price tags and after-sales packages.

During a recent media preview at the Proton Centre of Excellence in Shah Alam, we were told the five-door hatchback has specifications and equipment that are on par with or exceed non-national cars, but prices will be at national car levels.

We also learned that the PCC has a length of 3,905mm and wheelbase of 2,555mm which pits it against B-segment cars like the Honda Jazz, Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo.

It is due to be officially launched on September 25 at Proton City in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

"The PCC is not a small A-segment car. This is why it is now referred to as the PCC, instead of the GSC (Global Small Car) which was used earlier," said Proton chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah.

Abdul Harith said the PCC took four years and RM500mil to develop.

"It uses a new platform, and has new 1.3 and 1.6-litre engines with VVT (variable valve timing). Hopefully, this is the game changer for Proton and also, our export programme," he said.

The 1.3-litre PCC comes in entry-grade Standard and mid-grade Executive variants, while the 1.6-litre PCC has Executive and high-grade Premium variants.

For all variants, the transmission is either a Getrag-sourced 5-speed manual or a 6-speed CVT (continuously variable transmission) from Punch Powertrain.

According to Proton chief technical officer (group engineering) Abdul Rashid Musa, the new 1.6-litre VVT engine outputs 107hp at 5,750rpm and 150Nm of torque at 3,750rpm.

"It is quite torquey and responsive," he said.

Kerb weight ranges from 1,150kg to 1,175kg.

"It is also the most fuel-efficient Proton car, being the first to achieve a fuel economy rating of below 7 litres per 100km," said Abdul Rashid.

The PCC's fuel consumption on the combined cycle (New European Driving Cycle or NEDC) is said to be 6.5 and 6.7 litres per 100km for the 1.3 and 1.6-litre (manual transmission) units respectively.

The PCC also uses an EPS (electric power steering) which reduces fuel consumption (up to 5%) and steering effort.

Meanwhile, the PCC also sets new benchmarks for safety in its class.

"We want Proton to be known for safety," said Abdul Rashid.

All PCC variants come standard with ESC (electronic stability control), ABS (anti-lock braking system), EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), traction control, brake assist, HHA (hill hold assist), and a SBR (seat belt reminder) system for all seat belts.

There are also ISOFIX attachment points for child safety seats.

Abdul Rashid pointed out the PCC uses HPF (Hot Press Forming) for ultra high strength steel.

"To reduce insurance costs, Thatcham vehicle security standards are applied," he added.

Meanwhile, Proton chief designer Azlan Othman said the PCC was designed at Proton facilities in Shah Alam.

"The design concepts are stylish and sporty. Exterior features can include projector headlamps, dual-function DRLs (day-time running lights), rear LED lights, and an integrated roof spoiler."

Azlan also noted that the PCC has many Proton "firsts", including wing mirrors on the front doors which "gives more space to the glass area and better visibility for the driver".

Executive and Premium units can come with a rear spoiler, diffuser and body kit.

The Premium variant has 15-inch alloy wheels, DRLs, leather upholstery, keyless entry and six airbags.

Other variants get 14-inch wheels and fabric seats.

On the pilot production cars (close to final production models) previewed by the media, we noticed that tyres are sized 195/55 R15 (Premium variants) and 175/65 R14 (non-Premium variants).

Features which are likely to be exclusive for the Premium variant include Follow Me Home lights, a reverse camera and 6.2-inch touchscreen.

There are also two additional power ports (1.5A and 2.1A) to charge smartphones and tablets.

The PCC has front disc brakes and rear drums, while its suspension uses a MacPherson strut front and rear torsion beam.

Features include a 4-door power window system with one-touch auto up/down for the driver's window, as well as bottle holders within the rear door bins.

The PCC comes in seven colours including two new and exclusive colours - Citrus Green and Silver Moon Dust.

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton's immediate plan would be to change its strategy from being a maker of cheap cars to become a world-standard car manufacturer, said newly appointed chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The fourth prime minister said Proton has always been labelled as a cheap or poor quality car maker.

"Now Proton wants to produce cars which are of world standard, but you have to pay a higher price.

"You can't have a good car and pay a bad car price," he told reporters when asked about his immediate plan for Proton.

Earlier on Monday, Dr Mahathir, who is Human Life Advancement Foundation (HLAF) chairman, delivered the keynote address and launched the HLAF Annual Award and Workshop at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC).

He said when Proton produced the Preve and Suprima car models, which are of good quality but sell for RM80,000, people claimed the price was too high for Proton.

"The next car of the same quality is RM120,000. You (consumers) want to have cheap cars ok, Proton can produce cheap cars," Dr Mahathir said.

Asked if Proton would continue to produce cheap cars, Dr Mahathir replied: "Proton have to make a living. If consumers want cheap cars Proton will make cheap cars, they run three miles and break down."

Responding to a question if Proton has approached the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) and Petronas for any funds, he said the car maker had never asked for funding.

Asked if he himself as Proton chairman would approach either for funding, Dr Mahathir replied: "No way, because Proton is a private company now and it is able to make progress in research and development."

Dr Mahathir also said the government was now encouraging importation of cars rather than encouraging local industries.

"When you import cars, money flows out and you don't get any technology from them," he added.

Asked if Proton needs government aid, he said former South Korean President Park Chung Hee during his tenure called up 12 individuals and told them they must go into industry and he would provide the loans and funds.

These companies, like Hyundai, LG and Daewoo, were private companies and their government fully helped them, and because of that today they do not need government help anymore, he added. - Bernama

SHAH ALAM: Proton is having a promotion this month ahead of Ramadan and Raya.

It is dangling cash rebates of up to RM8,000 on selected models.

In addition, it is offering 3 years free service and interest rates from as low as 2.70%.

The nationwide promotion ends on June 30.
PETALING JAYA: Proton Holdings Bhd is in for challenging times ahead as it critically needs to develop new technology to remain competitive and win back lost market share, says CIMB Research.

The research house highlighted in a report that the national carmaker’s market share had fallen to 21.2% in 2012 from 26% in 2011.

“Year-to-date April 2014, Proton’s market share slid even further to 19%. Proton needs to address this problem fast,” it said, adding that the company’s upcoming global small car, slated for launch in the fourth quarter of this year, was key to Proton’s “long-term survival”.

“If the model is successful, it will enable Proton to regain some of its market share, buy time for its long-term business plan, and underpin (parent company) DRB-Hicom’s commitment to seriously turn Proton around. Proton just cannot fail with this model.” pro-for-main00.jpg

The research house added that developing new technology on a continuous and consistent basis was also a challenge for Proton.

“Its lack of economies of scale is a major hindrance, as it is not able to bring down the unit price of its vehicles as its development costs are spread across a smaller number of units compared with its foreign competitors, thus resulting in uncompetitive pricing for its vehicles.

“We believe the best way forward is to collaborate with a credible foreign partner to develop its new models,” CIMB Research said.

One industry observer pointed out that Proton needed to further develop its sales network to become more successful.

“A strong sales network is crucial, especially within the automotive industry. Whether the model is good or not, if you don’t have a strong network, you’ll have difficulty selling that product.”

All eyes are also on the carmaker following the appointment of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its chairman last month. The 88-year-old Mahathir has been Proton’s group adviser since the late 2003.

CIMB Research said it was neutral on Mahathir’s appointment as company chairman.

“With his influence and connections, we believe he will be able to help Proton especially in negotiations with policymakers and possible foreign partners.

“However, we believe the problems with Proton are structural problems that go way beyond the top-level management issues.

“As the automotive industry is basically a volume game, Proton is in desperate need to come up with a line of new models with competitive quality and pricing to enable it to regain its domestic market share and penetrate the export markets profitably,” it said.

BEIJING: Proton will work together with China's Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd to expand its market in the country.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the national carmaker and Geely were now discussing the matter after agreeing to explore the idea last month.

"The areas of cooperation could include vehicle design, sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, import and distribution for Asean and the China markets,” Najib told  reporters here on Thursday.

The prime minister said if Proton and Geely were to work together, the Malaysian car maker would produce cars based on Geely designs.

Geely cars are mostly sold in China.

As of April 4 last year, the company's total market capitalisation was US$3.9 billion. - Bernama

TOKYO: Proton Holdings Bhd, the national carmaker, is negotiating with several Japanese car manufacturers on the prospects of future collaborations, Proton Chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Friday.

However, any strategic collaboration was unlikely to include Mitsubishi, one of the leading japanese car makers, said the former prime minister.

"We are looking at other Japanese automotive makers. Right now we are cooperating with Honda," said Dr Mahathir when responding to a question from a Japanese journalist on whether Proton would continue its collaboration with Mitsubishi.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir, who is also Proton founder, delivered a keynote address at the seminar themed "Investment and Trade Opportunity in Kedah."

"Proton's performance can be improved and we will look closely at how we can continue to export our cars," he said.

In October 2012, Proton entered a collaboration with Honda Motor Company Ltd to explore collaborative opportunities in technology enhancement, new product line-up and sharing of vehicle platforms and facilities.

Following the collaboration, the second generation Proton Perdana was unveiled in December 2013 as the successor to the original Proton Perdana.

Dr Mahathir also said the Malaysian automotive market was small and in order to expand, Proton would have to concentrate on exports.

"We are going to look closely at the countries that we can export our cars so that the production can be increased as we have a big production capacity, which is not utilised," he said.

He said Proton would like to invite Japanese automotive companies to come to Malaysia as Proton itself could offer quite a big part of its production plant to any investors who would like to produce cars in Malaysia.

Earlier, in his keynote address, Dr Mahathir said Japanese car makers could look at Kedah where an automotive hub was being planned.

"In Kedah, Japanese investors can benefit from the good labour force and the supply of rubber materials from both Malaysia and (neighbour) Thailand," he added. - Bernama
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed that he will be appointed Chairman of Proton Holdings Bhd.
The official announcement is expected to be made tomorrow.

"My plan is to work with Proton, and make it (Proton) a success," he told reporters before the Asian Banker Annual Leadership Achievement Awards Dinner 2014 here tonight.

A news report on Tuesday said that Dr Mahathir will be appointed Proton Chairman, which was seen as DRB-Hicom Bhd's boldest move in its effort to transform Proton's sliding fortunes since it took the company private in 2012.

Since going private, DRB-Hicom has been trying to address it's slide by focusing on radical transformation measures for Proton's management and the appointment of Dr Mahathir is seen as a coup, given the former Prime Minister's deep knowledge and influence in the industry
and  government.

Dr Mahathir, who is also the current advisor to the country's pioneer carmaker since retiring as Prime Minister in 2003, however, did not comment on whether the current executive Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Khamil Jamil would withdraw from his post.

The news report also said that Dr Mahathir will also be appointed as Chairman of Proton's wholly-owned subsidiary, Lotus Plc, and was understood to have accepted both appointments.

At its peak, Proton, which had produced more than 3.5 million vehicles from its plants in Shah Alam, Selangor, and Tanjung Malim, Perak, held up to 85 per cent of the domestic car market.

However, a combination of factors including liberalisation ?of the domestic market with the influx of cheap foreign imports, competition from Perodua and the revised National Automotive Policy, among others, contributed towards Proton's slide.

Currently, Proton's domestic market share stood at about 22 per cent while export was relatively negligible.

Meanwhile, Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd Head of the Shariah Division Mohd Nazri Chik was the winner of the Asian Banker Promising Young Banker Awards among seven other winners from regional countries.

The Asian Banker Leadership Achievement Awards is widely acknowledged by the financial services industry as the highest possible accolade available to professionals and banks in Asia Pacific and the Middle East. -- BERNAMA

The announcement of the awards was made by Asean NCAP at the Phase III Result Launch 2014 in Malacca, which was also held in conjunction with the 2014 Global NCAP Forum in Melbourne, said Proton in a statement.

Proton chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah said Proton's drive to change the public perception about the brand and quality of Proton cars was reinforced by the latest achievement.

"As we have reiterated time and time again, our models are not just affordable but more importantly we want our customers to know that our products are of international quality and standards," he said.

Abdul Harith also said out of the 12 cars tested for Asean NCAP safety standards during Phase III, Proton came in a close second in the results.

"The well-being, comfort and safety of our customers when driving Proton cars has always been, and continue to be our top priority. So when the Proton Preve and Proton Suprima S were developed, we challenged ourselves to produce a car with high safety standards." - Bernama

PETALING JAYA: Proton, which confirmed Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah as its chief executive officer, will be overhauled.

“We want to make cars people want,” said Proton chairman Tan Sri Khamil Mohd Jamil.

In speaking broadly about Proton, Khamil hinted that part of the revamp would continue to focus on improving car quality and safety.

Khamil said that over the past two years since DRB-Hicom Bhd took control of beleagured Proton, much effort had been spent on lifting the quality of the cars it made by cutting down on defects and improving safety.

Since then, car buyers have voiced fewer complaints about Proton cars, said Khamil.

He said because of the longstanding negative public perception, Proton is open to suggestions from the public on how it should improve itself.

“We will be working towards changing the perception of Proton to one where Proton is a good car and, change the minds and hearts of the public towards our cars.”

Khamil said the management team would review products, quality, cost, delivery and safety.

He said Proton would continue to export its cars amid a landscape that is seeing increasing competition.

Khamil said Proton had no choice but to make the cars it sells affordable and competitive.

“It will be a holistic plan that will look at products and markets. We ... also cannot ignore China,” he said.

“Proton needs to prove it can compete with international OEMs (original equipment manufacturers),” he said after a ceremony to send two graduates from its International College of Automotive (ICAM) to a Volkswagen plant in Portugal for training.

Khamil said future ICAM graduates would also be sent for overseas training at plants of its other partners in Japan and Europe.

He said the company hoped the graduates would return with the knowledge and experience and share them with other workers in DRB-Hicom’s plant in Pekan.

“It’s a good milestone for students at ICAM and they will be exposed to international standards,” he said.

ICAM is working towards achieveing university status by the end of the year.

Khamil, in response to backlash over a report that questioned why Malaysians were not supportive of Proton, said the company was appreciative of public support and would strive to make cars that Malaysians actually wanted.

“Those comments were taken out of context. We are appreciative of support from the public, without which Proton will not be where it is now,” he said.

PETALING JAYA: Lotus, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Proton Holdings Berhad (Proton), opened its first 4S Centre in Beijing, China in an event officiated by Proton advisor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Also present were Tan Sri Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Khamil Jamil, the executive chairman of Proton and chairman of Group Lotus, as well as Aslam Farikullah, chief officer of Group Lotus.

According to Aslam, China has been at the forefront of global economic development and consequently there has been a growing trend of international car brands taking an interest in China by opening factories and dealerships, “China’s growth has not only opened the eyes of the international business community, but it has also inspired us to open this new Lotus 4S Centre.”

The Centre sits on a foot-print of approximately 1,000 sq m over four floors at the Golden Port Motor Park in Beijing.

The Centre is set to offer a complete Lotus experience with a showroom and a comprehensive service centre, where owners will be able to service, and obtain spare parts for their Lotus cars.

The one stop centre also houses an administrative office, merchandise retail corner, customers lounge and a training centre.

The building also comes with a complete customer service experience as it houses a club house for Lotus owners with a member’s lounge, and other amenities.

Lotus currently has eight dealerships in China, including in major parts of the country like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Dalian among others. Lotus models that are currently made available to the China market are the Evora S IPS, the Exige S240 and S260 as well as the Elise CR.

KUALA LUMPUR: The state governments of Kedah and Perak have each received a fleet of Proton Perdanas, in support of the national carmaker’s turnaround plan.

Receiving the vehicles at the respective state government offices were Chief Minister of Kedah Datuk Paduka Mukhriz Bin Tun Dr. Mahathir and Chief Minister of Perak Datuk Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir from DRB-HICOM Berhad while representatives from PROTON Holdings Berhad representatives looked on.

Prior to the handing over of the fleets, the new Perdana was also presented to the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

KUALA LUMPUR: The International Trade and Industry Minister has confirmed that Proton has approached the Government for funding, adding that the request is being studied.

“They have submitted (their request) and it is still a work in progress,” said Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed after a dialogue on Malaysia and the Asean Economic Community (AEC) here yesterday.

Mustapa did not divulge the nature of Proton’s request, and skirted disclosing the specifics of the request from Proton by saying “it’s not our practice to reveal details”.

StarBiz had reported yesterday that Proton was seeking up to RM3bil in funding from the Government and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), but has been futile in its attempts so far.

Proton, which is a unit of DRB-Hicom Bhd, is seeking fresh funding to execute its transformation plan that will see new models being developed, including an electric car.

It has been reported that Proton has committed RM3.8bil in investments until 2017 and needs more capital to be competitive and achieve its turnaround plan.

Mustapa said companies in general were eligible for three types of incentives from the Government - pioneer status, which gives companies tax incentives, a research and development grant and incentives for training.

He said the request from Proton was not unusual and that companies did approach the Government for tailored incentives and that the Government reciprocated by dangling certain carrots and benefits if deemed worthy.

The minister, however, said there were limitations as to whether incentives would be given. “These incentives are available depending on the Government’s financial situation,” he explained.

Mustapa said there were a number of considerations his ministry looked at when determining whether to grant funding. “We want to know if it fits into the country’s strategic direction. We also look at the merits of the case, the availability of funds at that point in time and we will do a thorough due diligence and cost-benefit analysis,” he said.

The report yesterday revealed that the national carmaker had first approached the International Trade and Industry Ministry last year for funding, but its request was turned down. The reason was that Proton couldn’t fully justify why it needed such funding from the Government.

It later approached Petronas, but Proton was not successful in raising the much-needed cash from the national oil company either.

Its difficulty in raising funds also comes at a time when the position of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Petronas adviser is a talking point.

On Dec 2 last year, Dr Mahathir announced that he was quitting as adviser to Petronas. Subsequently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak urged him to reconsider his decision.

Dr Mahathir’s role as adviser to Petronas is still up in the air. The former Prime Minister remains as adviser to Proton.

Meanwhile, Mustapa said Malaysia had implemented 88% of the measures needed for the regional integration under the AEC, while the overall implementation for Asean was at 72%.

He noted that one of the challenges for the AEC was non-tariff barriers. “We have abolished several non-tariff barriers,” he said, adding that Asean economic ministers had made reducing non-tariff barriers a priority for the AEC.

The AEC is the goal of regional economic integration among all 10 members of Asean by 2015. The objective is to remove barriers to trade in goods, services investments, capital and skilled workers to create a single duty-free market of over 600 million people and US$2.3 trillion in gross domestic product.
